The Department of Computer Science is repositioning itself!

Professor Fink had been Dean of the department since 2012 and shaped the department in many ways. During his tenure, the number of students grew from less than 2,000 to almost 6,000 in the 2019/20 winter semester. This development was accompanied by an increase in the number of professors in the department. This was due not least to the intensified research successes of Dortmund's computer science professors, which characterized the outgoing dean's term of office and increased the department's attractiveness enormously.
For example, the Machine Learning Competence Center Rhine-Ruhr (ML2R) was consolidated as the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Cooperation with neighboring universities also intensified within the University Alliance Ruhr, which manifested itself in the establishment of the Research Center Trustworthy Data Science and Security, among other things.
A highlight of Professor Fink's tenure was the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Department of Computer Science, established in 1972 as the Department of Computer Science at the former University of Dortmund. Founded in the early 1970s as one of the first university departments of computer science, it is now one of the largest computer science faculties in Germany.
Professor Jens Teubner has put together a powerful team to continue this successful path. Professor Mario Botsch takes over from Professor Peter Buchholz as Vice Dean, while Professor Stefan Harmeling takes over from Professor Teubner as Dean of Studies in the Department of Computer Science.
The new Dean's Office will be supported by Dr. Lukas Rehm, who succeeded Dr. Stefan Dißmann, the long-standing Managing Director of the Department of Computer Science, in the summer.
