The department congratulates the first doctoral candidate from the Research Center Trust

The Department of Computer Science at TU Dortmund University congratulates Dr. Carina Newen on her successful doctorate. Her work also marks an important moment for the Research Center Trustworthy Data Science and Security (RC Trust): She is the first doctoral student to complete her doctorate within the Center.
In her dissertation "Uncertainty Quantification for Interpretable and Reliable Machine Learning", Newen investigates when we can trust artificial intelligence - and how systems can show that this trust is justified. To this end, she combines three research areas: explainable AI, robust AI and uncertainty quantification. Its aim is to develop models that not only deliver results, but also make their own reliability transparent.
The RC Trust combines expertise in machine learning, data science, cybersecurity and psychology across the universities of the University Alliance Ruhr - TU Dortmund University, Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen. Prof. Dr. Emmanuel Müller, founding director of the center and supervisor of Carina Newen's doctorate, emphasizes: "Interdisciplinarity is crucial for shaping trust in AI in a technically and socially sound manner."
With this first doctorate, the RC Trust demonstrates in an exemplary manner how cooperation between computer science and the humanities opens up new paths for responsible AI - in the Ruhr region and far beyond.
