Falk Howar (TU Dortmund University) and Brian Jahnke (Fraunhofer ISST): Sustainability in software engineering
Abstract:
Sustainable software development aims at a design that is ecologically viable, socially just and economically sensible. This requires a conscious examination of how we develop software, what we develop, how long software remains usable and what long-term effects it generates. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of aspects of sustainability that are relevant in software engineering and illustrate these using selected examples. We will then delve deeper into two topics from our research: (a) automated rightsizing of virtual machines in cloud deployments, which can make the use of resources in large infrastructures more efficient and significantly reduce energy consumption, and (b) ethical deliberation in software development, illustrated using the example of autonomous vehicles and the special responsibility associated with their development.
