Sebastian Buschjäger, Christian Hakert: Up-cycling and sustainable reuse of compute devices

Abstract:

Outdated gaming consoles, such as the PlayStation 4, hold untapped potential far beyond basic recycling. Through upcycling, their computational capabilities can be repurposed for modern applications. This lecture presents a practical case study of converting a PlayStation 4 into a compute server for machine learning tasks. We demonstrate how this repurposed hardware can be used for image analysis, highlighting both the technical process and the broader potential of sustainable computing.
