On February 20, 2025, Prof. Edward Lee will give a lecture on the sentience of embodied AI.

Could machines one day develop something like consciousness? How will artificial intelligence change when it not only analyzes data but also interacts with the physical world? And: Should robots be held responsible for their actions in the future? These are the questions addressed in a special edition of "TU Dortmund University in Conversation".

Edward A. Lee, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, who has driven the development of innovative technologies such as the open source projects Ptolemy and Lingua Franca for many years, will give a lecture. His work ranges from the technical foundations of robotics and signal-based systems to the philosophical and social implications of technology. In his lecture "Will Embodied AI Become Sentient?", he will shed light on how artificial intelligence could reach a new dimension through interaction with its physical environment.

The panel discussion will include:

  • Prof. Jens Gerken, Professor of Inclusive Human-Robot Interaction, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, TU Dortmund University
  • Prof. Nicole Krämer, Professor of Social Psychology, Media and Communication, Department of Engineering, University of Duisburg-Essen
  • Prof. Sergio Lucia, Professor of Process Automation Systems, Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, TU Dortmund University
  • Prof. Eva Schmidt, Professor of Theoretical Philosophy, Department of Human Sciences and Theology, TU Dortmund University

Prof. Jakob Rehof from the Department of Computer Science at TU Dortmund University will moderate the discussion.
