Welcome to the Department of Computer Science Jun.-Prof. Dr. Matthias Feurer!

Matthias Feurer has held the junior professorship for "Automated Machine Learning and Optimization" at the Lamarr Institute of TU Dortmund University since the winter semester 2025/26. Previously, he was a Thomas Bayes Fellow at the Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML) and substitute professor at LMU Munich from 2023 to 2025. His scientific work is located in the field of automated machine learning (AutoML), with a focus on hyperparameter optimization and methods that make machine learning easier to use.

In his inaugural lecture, he will give an overview of the research field AutoML as well as his current research on robust hyperparameter optimization, prompt optimization and Bayesian design of experiments. He focuses on methods that not only improve the performance of machine learning methods, but also take other criteria such as resource efficiency and interpretability into account. He concludes the lecture with an outlook on the future of the research field under the influence of large language models and other basic models.
