At the end of their joint Sustainability Week, TU Dortmund University and Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts awarded the "Impact Cup" for the second time on May 22. The prizes for special commitment to sustainability went to the Sustainability Commission of the Department of Computer Science at TU Dortmund University and the Purchasing team at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. The Sustainability Office at TU Dortmund University and the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Office at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts created the award together to highlight the outstanding commitment of university members at both locations.
Prof. Gerhard Schembecker, Vice-President of Finance, presented the Impact Cup to the Sustainability Commission of the Department of Computer Science on behalf of TU Dortmund University. The commission - consisting of professors, academic and non-academic staff and students - has been coordinating projects that promote sustainable action in research and teaching for three years: last year, for example, it launched a sustainability award at the department and introduced the lecture series "Computer Science and Sustainability". With their personal commitment, the representatives of the commission have firmly anchored the topic of sustainability in the Faculty of Computer Science and created a competent and binding contact point for the faculty members, from which the sustainability officers of the other departments and not least the Sustainability Office of TU Dortmund University also benefit, according to the jury's statement.
Sustainability in teaching, research and administration
"The Impact Cup also shows how diverse sustainability commitment can and must be in order for the sustainable transformation at universities to succeed," said Dr. Henning Moldenhauer, Head of the TU Sustainability Office, during the ceremony. "The implementation of education for sustainable development in university teaching, research for sustainability and responsible action by the university in relation to procurement are major challenges for successful change. This year's award winners are taking important first steps here - as a team effort."
The award ceremony, which was jointly organized and moderated by the employees of the Sustainability Office and the CSR Office, took place in the kostBar on the FH campus. The trophies for the award were designed and built by TU trainees from the Technical Product Design 2024 department: A floating metal watering can above a green plant symbolizes sustainability, which should grow steadily through shared care.
Sustainability action week
Together with the General Student Committees (AStAs) of both universities as well as the Studierendenwerk Dortmund and the CampusForFuture university group, the sustainability offices once again organized a joint sustainability week on campus. In numerous lectures, workshops and at activity and information stands from 19 to 22 May, the organizers provided information about the various aspects of sustainability and practical tips for sustainable living in everyday life.
