The Operational Research Society (ORS) is an organization dedicated to advancing the field of operational research and analytics. For more than 75 years, it has been a community of professionals, academics and students who are passionate about the science of decision making, i.e. the use of data and analytics to solve complex problems and improve organizational effectiveness.
The Ranyard Medal is awarded in recognition of the most outstanding contribution to the philosophy, theory or practice of business analytics published in the Journal of Business Analytics within a two-year period. It is named after John Ranyard, who has made a significant contribution to the field of business analytics. He had a distinguished career as a practitioner in operations research and established himself as a leader in building relationships between academics and industry, commerce and the public sector.
Prof. Janiesch's article "A social evaluation of the perceived goodness of explainability in machine learning" with his co-authors Jonas Wanner, Lukas-Valentin Herm, Kai Heinrich was awarded by the ORS. The article deals with the field of explainable artificial intelligence. Research in this field often neglects the human factor. Against this background, the authors have derived and investigated factors that influence the quality of the explainability of a model in an evaluation by end users. The results show that the perceived quality of explainability is moderated by the problem type and correlates strongly with trustworthiness as the most important factor.
The article is available at DOI: 10.1080/2573234X.2021.1952913.
The certificate and the Ranyard Medal were awarded at the Blackett Memorial Lecture at the Royal Society in London.
