Peter Marwedel: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for PCs and mobile devices
Abstract:
What environmental impact does the use of PCs and mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets generate? This is the question addressed in this lecture. Answers to this question are provided by a so-called life cycle assessment (LCA). In such an analysis, the environmental impact of a product is examined over the various life cycles (from raw material extraction to disposal). It must be explicitly explained which effects, if any, are not examined in more detail. The lecture will present the results of such analyses for PCs and mobile devices and compare the environmental impacts of the devices with each other. We will then look at selected aspects of the individual cycles such as production and use. The presentation concludes with suggestions for reducing the ecological footprint.
