Information for Outgoings

General Procedure

After a positively evaluated application, the stay must be carefully prepared individually. In addition to acquiring the relevant language skills, planning the trip and organizing accommodation on site, the Learning Agreement (LA) plays a particularly important role.

The LA sets out in advance which of the courses taken locally are to be recognized by us after the stay, with 1:1 course assignments. It is important that the content and scope (roughly) match (number of ECTS credits). In addition, the relevant courses must of course fit into the respective curriculum. Ungraded courses cannot be recognized as graded, but in exceptional cases, courses that are actually graded can be recognized as ungraded. Grades are usually converted using the Aachen table. Seminars etc. can also be recognized, provided that the courses are similar in terms of delivery. Theses are possible in principle, but always require individual agreements with the supervisors. The International Coordination Office of the Faculty of Computer Science checks and signs the Learning Agreements.

Every stay is different and usually provides many positive impressions and experiences, and occasionally also challenges and hurdles. The international coordinators are always available to answer questions, especially regarding the Learning Agreement (changes are possible up to one month after arrival).

After your return, your achievements must still be recognized, which will be confirmed by the examination board ("Prüfungsauschuss ") - together with other documents at the end of your stay, such as the Recognition Outcome for Erasmus+.  The coordinators will review these documents in advance - so please send us three completed PDF documents:

  • The application for recognition (for your further studies)
  • Other documents (e.g. Recognition Outcome)
  • The attachments (summarized as one PDF):
    • The signed Transcript of Records & grade conversion
    • The signed Learning Agreement (and any subsequent amendments)
    • The module descriptions/manuals of the courses you want to have recognized here.

We will review everything and, if everything fits, forward it for signature (can take a few days to weeks). The signed application for recognition must then be sent to the Examinations Office, which will then actually enter it in BOSS.

Possibilities and Programs

The Erasmus+ program has been promoting student exchanges within Europe for over 30 years. The Faculty of Computer Science has partnerships with a total of 15 universities in 11 European countries and facilitates exchanges for students and employees. The application deadline is always at the end of January for the following winter and summer semester, further information on cooperation and application can be found here.

The overseas exchange programme is organized centrally by our International Office - the application deadline is 30.10. (for stays in or after the winter semester in the following year).

Internships abroad must be organized individually, but there are also opportunities for scholarships - the International Office provides further information and helps with the placement. The planning of an internship should begin at least 6 months before the intended stay.

Short programs offer the opportunity to gain exciting experience abroad in a short period of time - current calls for applications and further information are available from the International Office.

Theses can also be completed abroad - however, this is only possible on an individual basis. First of all, the supervision of the thesis in Dortmund must be clarified, and usually the respective Prof. provides some possibilities for stays abroad. The International Office provides information on funding opportunities. Planning and especially applications for scholarship programs require a certain lead time (6-12 months depending on the circumstances).
