Professor Dr. Günter Rudolph has passed away

It is with great dismay and deep sorrow that we bid farewell to Professor Dr. Günter Rudolph, who had a decisive influence on the field of computer science at the Technical University of Dortmund for many years.
Günter Rudolph’s research focused on computational intelligence and evolutionary algorithms. Through his mathematically rigorous research, he made a significant contribution to advancing evolutionary optimization methods in a way that was both internationally recognized and scientifically sound. Particularly noteworthy, however, was Günter Rudolph’s affinity for interdisciplinary questions: his work in music informatics combined “classical” computational perspectives with aesthetic and cultural questions, thereby shaping a field that, like no other, stands for his scientific openness and intellectual curiosity.
After completing his computer science studies and earning his doctorate at the University of Dortmund, he remained closely connected to the university for decades. Since 2005, he served as a professor in the Department of Computer Science at TU Dortmund University, where he led the Computational Intelligence research group.
Professor Rudolph never viewed research as an end in itself. He fostered interdisciplinary collaboration, guided numerous academic careers, and served as a demanding yet always helpful and approachable mentor to both students and staff. Günter Rudolph was also highly regarded beyond the university. His academic achievements were recognized both nationally and internationally, most recently with the IEEE Evolutionary Computation Pioneer Award.
With the passing of Günter Rudolph, the field of computer science has lost an outstanding scientist, a dedicated university professor, and a valued colleague. His legacy will endure long after his time.
Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, his friends, and all those who were connected to him personally and professionally.
The Department of Computer Science at the Technical University of Dortmund will honor the memory of Professor Dr. Günter Rudolph.
