Alumnus of the Department Receives the ACM SIGBED Paul Caspi Memorial Dissertation Award

Dr. Mario Günzel, an alumnus of the Department of Computer Science at TU Dortmund University, has received the ACM SIGBED Paul Caspi Memorial Dissertation Award 2024–2025. The ACM Special Interest Group on Embedded Systems (SIGBED) honours his dissertation “Property-based Timing Analysis of Distributed Real-Time Systems”, which he completed at the Department of Computer Science under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jian-Jia Chen. The award was presented in early October at the IEEE/ACM Embedded Systems Week (ESWEEK) 2026 in Barcelona. Günzel is now a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems (MPI-SWS) in Kaiserslautern. He brought with him the DFG project “Property-Based End-to-End Analysis of Cause-Effect Chains” (PEACH), which he had acquired while at the department.
In his work, Günzel investigates the timing behaviour of distributed real-time systems. His research addresses how to reliably guarantee that data is processed and passed on in time in systems made up of many interconnected components. Such guarantees are essential in fields including automotive engineering, medical technology and industrial manufacturing.
The Paul Caspi Memorial Dissertation Award was established in 2013. It recognises outstanding doctoral dissertations that significantly advance the science of embedded systems, carrying forward the scientific work and legacy of Dr. Paul Caspi. The award is presented at most once a year. An international committee chaired by Prof. Wanli Chang (Hunan University) selected two dissertations: Mario Günzel’s and that of Yuze He (The Chinese University of Hong Kong). The award comes with an honorarium of USD 2,000, and the recipients are invited to publish a summary of their dissertation in the ACM SIGBED Newsletter. Previous awardees include graduates of ETH Zurich, UC Berkeley and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
The department warmly congratulates its alumnus Dr. Mario Günzel on this outstanding achievement.
