Prof. Christian Janiesch classifies AI debate: Computer scientists remain in demand
- News

Artificial intelligence is changing the world of work - also in computer science. In a report by WDR Lokalzeit Dortmund, Prof. Dr. Christian Janiesch commented on the discussion about the effects of AI on career prospects in computer science.
The starting point of the report was the pointed question of whether AI could make computer science students unemployed in the future. Prof. Janiesch clearly contradicts such a view: although language models and AI systems are changing knowledge work in many areas, the department is continuously preparing its students for the requirements of a changing digital working world.
"Computer scientists will not be the cab drivers of tomorrow. Because the cabs of tomorrow will drive themselves," says Prof. Janiesch. This is precisely why skills are needed that go beyond pure programming and combine technical knowledge with professional understanding.
This approach also receives support from the field. In the WDR report, Michael Hagedorn, CEO of the Materna Group, emphasizes the continuing high demand for computer scientists. At the same time, it will become even more important in future to combine technological solutions with business management requirements.
For the department, this confirms the importance of the courses it offers in the field of business informatics. The combination of computer science, data analysis and business expertise creates important prerequisites for actively shaping digital transformation processes and meeting the future requirements of the job market.
