The Bachelor's and Master's thesis is a module examination. Every examination must be registered, including the Bachelor's and Master's thesis.

Topics for theses

  • can be found on the websites or notice boards of the chairs and determined with the university lecturer (or, in exceptional cases, a member of staff, see below) of the department who suggested the topic,
  • can be determined in consultation with a professor (or member of staff) of the department or
  • also with external experts with the participation of a university lecturer (or employee) of the department(external experts must submit an application for review (first or second review) (form below) ; also internal non-doctoral employees).

Group work

Theses can no longer be written in the form of a group thesis.

Supervisor and reviewer of the thesis

The Bachelor's thesis is issued and supervised by a professor, a junior professor or a habilitated member of the Department of Computer Science. Other academics must apply for the approval of the Examination Board. The thesis is reviewed and assessed by the supervisor and another examiner.

For Bachelor's theses, one of the examiners must be a member of the Department of Computer Science with a doctorate; for Master's theses, one of the examiners must be a professor, junior professor or habilitated member of the Department of Computer Science.

For teacher training programs, please refer to your current examination regulations.

Registration of the thesis

Once you and your supervisor have decided on the topic of your thesis, register your thesis.

The Examinations Office (Dec. 4.3) will check whether you meet the requirements for registering your thesis (120 credit points in the Bachelor's degree program and 60 credit points in the Master's degree program). If you meet the requirements, the Examinations Office will issue you with a routing slip in which your name, the title of the thesis, the names of the assessors and the start and submission date of the thesis are entered. You must have the routing slip signed by your first reviewer and return it to the Examinations Office within seven days.

You can only return the topic once and only within the first three weeks; the thesis is then deemed not to have been started. In your examination regulations you will find the conditions under which this return of the topic is possible.

The processing time for Bachelor's theses in Computer Science and Applied Computer Science is four months; in justified exceptional cases, the processing time can be extended once upon request. The processing time for Bachelor's theses in the teaching profession according to LABG2009 is eight weeks; in the case of an empirical or artistic Bachelor's thesis, an extension of four weeks can be applied for.
